Overview

Microsoft is hiring a Principal Applied Scientist to lead the Signals Modeling team in developing large-scale learning systems for the advertising marketplace. You'll work on advanced inference techniques and causal measurement methodologies. This role requires expertise in data-driven decision-making and scientific rigor.

Job Description

Who you are

You have a strong background in applied science, particularly in developing large-scale learning systems that can infer intent and causal effects from incomplete data. Your experience includes working with complex models that optimize outcomes in advertising and marketplace dynamics. You understand the importance of accurate attribution and measurement in influencing significant advertising spend, and you are passionate about shaping methodologies that drive value across ecosystems.

You possess a deep understanding of representation learning, weak-supervision, multi-objective training, and rigorous experimentation. Your expertise allows you to transform sparse engagement signals into reliable learning targets, ensuring that models remain robust even under challenging conditions such as delayed conversions and selection bias. You thrive in high-ownership roles where scientific rigor is essential, and you are adept at solving structurally hard problems with limited ground truth.

What you'll do

As a Principal Applied Scientist, you will define the future of data-driven attribution and causal measurement within the Signals Modeling team. You will collaborate with research, engineering, and product leadership to introduce advanced inference techniques into production systems that operate at massive scale. Your role will involve designing and operating state-of-the-art modeling platforms that enhance decision-making across ranking, bidding, pricing, and budget allocation.

You will lead efforts to develop methodologies that optimize advertiser value from initial impressions through downstream conversions. Your work will directly influence how the advertising marketplace understands user behavior and measures impact. You will be responsible for ensuring that the models you develop are scientifically rigorous and capable of adapting to rapidly shifting marketplace dynamics.

What we offer

At Microsoft, you will be part of a team that is at the forefront of innovation in advertising technology. We offer a collaborative environment where your contributions will have a direct impact on the future of marketplace optimization. You will have access to cutting-edge resources and the opportunity to work alongside some of the brightest minds in the industry. We encourage you to apply even if your experience doesn't match every requirement, as we value diverse perspectives and backgrounds.
