Overview
Motional is hiring a Staff Software Engineer to lead the development of operational tools for their Autonomous Vehicle ride service. You'll work with technologies like Java and AWS in Las Vegas. This role requires a strong product mindset and leadership skills.
Job Description
Who you are
You have a strong background in software engineering with experience in building operational tools for complex systems — your expertise in Java and Python allows you to create scalable solutions that meet real-world needs. You understand the importance of aligning engineering efforts with operational goals, ensuring that the tools you develop are user-friendly and effective for the operations team.
You possess excellent leadership skills and have experience mentoring junior engineers — you enjoy sharing your knowledge and guiding others in their professional development. Your ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders makes you a key player in bridging the gap between operations and engineering teams.
You are comfortable working in a fast-paced environment where you can balance immediate operational needs with long-term scalability — your product mindset enables you to prioritize tasks effectively and deliver high-impact solutions. You thrive in collaborative settings and are eager to contribute to a culture of innovation and continuous improvement.
Desirable
Experience in the autonomous vehicle industry or related fields would be a plus — familiarity with fleet management systems and orchestration tools can help you hit the ground running. A background in cloud technologies, particularly AWS, will enhance your ability to develop robust and scalable applications.
What you'll do
As a Staff Software Engineer at Motional, you will lead the development of critical operational tools that support the daily management of our self-driving vehicle fleet — your hands-on approach will involve coding and delivering both frontend and backend services that the operations team relies on. You will act as the primary engineering presence at the Las Vegas AV operation center, providing real-time technical support and troubleshooting to ensure mission success.
You will collaborate closely with operations partners to understand their needs and translate them into technical requirements — your role will involve defining workflows and documentation standards that facilitate seamless communication between teams in Las Vegas and Singapore. You will also be responsible for interviewing and onboarding future hires, ensuring that the engineering team continues to grow and evolve.
Your contributions will directly impact the success of our commercial Autonomous Vehicle ride service — you will shape the roadmap for technology development, ensuring that our solutions are not only effective but also aligned with the strategic goals of the organization. You will have the opportunity to work on innovative projects that push the boundaries of technology in the autonomous vehicle space.
What we offer
Motional provides a dynamic work environment where you can make a significant impact on the future of transportation — you will be part of a team that is dedicated to advancing autonomous vehicle technology and creating safer, more efficient transportation solutions. We offer competitive compensation and benefits, along with opportunities for professional growth and development.
Join us in Las Vegas, where you will work in a vibrant city known for its innovation and technology — our office is located close to the Las Vegas strip, providing a unique backdrop for your work. We encourage you to apply even if your experience doesn't match every requirement, as we value diverse perspectives and backgrounds.
