Who you are

You have 5+ years of professional backend engineering experience, building production systems at scale — you've owned services from design through deployment and have a strong understanding of distributed systems, data structures, and algorithms. Your expertise in Java allows you to develop high-performance backend services and APIs that can handle millions of requests. You are proficient in SQL and NoSQL databases, ensuring data integrity and performance in your applications.

You have a solid track record of delivering consumer-facing products at scale — your experience includes building and maintaining production-grade APIs and microservices that integrate seamlessly with various platforms. Your familiarity with AI/ML platforms and services, such as OpenAI and Hugging Face, positions you well to translate AI capabilities into production-ready features. You are enthusiastic about working with cutting-edge AI technologies, including large language models (LLMs) and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG).

You understand the importance of high reliability, performance, and security in AI-powered systems — your collaborative nature allows you to work effectively with product and engineering teams to gather requirements and deliver innovative solutions. You are eager to expand your expertise into AI while leveraging your strong engineering foundation.

Desirable

Experience with vector databases and embedding technologies would be a plus, as well as familiarity with cloud platforms like AWS, GCP, or Azure. You are comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and are open to learning new technologies as needed.

What you'll do

In this role, you will design and develop scalable, high-performance backend services and APIs that integrate AI capabilities into Navan's travel and expense management products. You will implement integrations with AI platforms and services, collaborating closely with AI specialists to ensure that AI capabilities are effectively translated into production-ready features. Your responsibilities will include ensuring the high reliability, performance, and security of AI-powered systems, which are critical for user satisfaction and trust.

You will work with cross-functional teams to gather requirements and deliver solutions that meet user needs. Your role will involve not only coding but also participating in architectural discussions and design reviews to ensure that the systems you build are robust and scalable. You will have the opportunity to mentor junior engineers and contribute to the overall growth of the engineering team.
