Job Description

Who you are

You have a solid background in curriculum design, particularly in K-12 English Language Arts (ELA), and are passionate about creating engaging, standards-aligned instructional materials. Your experience includes hands-on content creation, where you've authored detailed lessons, activities, and student worksheets that adhere to established instructional models. You are adept at selecting and editing grade-appropriate texts, ensuring they align with ELA learning objectives and provide rich opportunities for skills practice.

Your expertise extends to assessment design, where you develop clear and concise formative and summative assessment items that effectively measure student progress against specific learning outcomes. You understand the importance of quality assurance and provide focused editorial and pedagogical feedback on content drafts, ensuring accuracy and student engagement. You are familiar with evidence-based principles of learning science and apply best practices for reading comprehension and language development in your work.

You possess strong organizational skills and can prioritize tasks effectively in conjunction with business needs. Your verbal communication skills enable you to collaborate effectively with internal teams and external contributors. You are also fluent with AI tools and have experience working with digital content authoring tools or content management systems (CMS).

Desirable

Prior classroom teaching experience in K-12 ELA is preferred, as it enhances your understanding of the educational landscape and the needs of students and teachers alike. Familiarity with digital content authoring tools will further support your ability to create high-quality instructional content.

What you'll do

In this role, you will be a key driver in the development and production of instructional materials for Newsela's supplemental K-12 ELA product. You will directly write, design, and structure detailed lessons and activities based on established instructional models. Your responsibilities will include identifying, vetting, and editing student-facing texts to ensure they align with learning objectives. You will also develop assessment items and rubrics that measure student progress effectively.

Quality assurance will be a significant part of your role, as you will review content drafts produced by internal teams or external contributors, providing editorial and pedagogical feedback to ensure accuracy and engagement. You will apply fundamental principles of learning science in your instructional design, ensuring that materials are not only educational but also engaging for students.

Collaboration will be key, as you will work closely with other team members to ensure that the instructional materials meet the needs of educators and students. You will also have the opportunity to contribute to the continuous improvement of the curriculum by incorporating feedback and best practices into your work.
