Overview

OpenGov is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to lead architecture decisions and mentor engineers in building innovative products for local and state governments. This role requires strong technical expertise and a passion for problem-solving.

Job Description

Who you are

You are a seasoned engineer with a proven track record of turning ideas into MVPs rapidly — your experience spans over 10 years in software engineering, where you've led teams and driven architectural decisions that have significantly impacted product outcomes. You thrive in environments that challenge your technical skills and require innovative solutions to complex problems. Your ability to mentor and guide less experienced engineers is a key part of your leadership style, fostering a culture of growth and collaboration within your team.

You possess deep knowledge of modern technology stacks and are always eager to learn about the latest advancements in the field — your hands-on experience with various programming languages and frameworks allows you to contribute effectively to discussions about system architecture and design. You understand the importance of delivering high-quality products that meet user needs and are committed to maintaining best practices in software development.

Your strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities enable you to navigate challenges effectively — you are comfortable working under pressure and can prioritize tasks to meet tight deadlines. You are passionate about making a tangible impact through your work, particularly in the public sector, where you see the potential for technology to improve government services and community outcomes.

Desirable

Experience with cloud technologies and AI solutions is a plus, as you will be working on cutting-edge products that leverage these advancements. Familiarity with ERP systems and public sector challenges will help you understand the unique needs of our clients and contribute to the development of tailored solutions.

What you'll do

As a Principal Software Engineer at OpenGov, you will lead the technical direction of our product development efforts — your role will involve making critical architecture decisions that shape the future of our software solutions. You will collaborate closely with product managers, designers, and other engineers to ensure that our products not only meet functional requirements but also provide an exceptional user experience.

You will mentor and support a team of talented engineers, helping them to grow their skills and advance their careers — your leadership will be instrumental in fostering a collaborative and innovative team culture. You will also be responsible for conducting code reviews and ensuring that best practices are followed throughout the development process.

In addition to your technical responsibilities, you will engage with stakeholders to gather requirements and provide insights into the feasibility of proposed features — your ability to communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences will be key in aligning product development with business goals. You will also play a role in defining the product roadmap and prioritizing features based on user feedback and market trends.

What we offer

At OpenGov, we pride ourselves on our performance-based culture where every employee is encouraged to contribute ideas and take initiative — your contributions will be recognized and rewarded, and there are ample opportunities for career advancement. We offer a competitive salary and benefits package, along with a supportive work environment that values innovation and collaboration. Join us in our mission to empower governments to serve their communities more effectively and efficiently.
