Who you are

You have 5+ years of software engineering experience, particularly in building high-scale, low-latency systems. Your expertise lies at the intersection of distributed systems, networking, and security, and you have a strong understanding of how to protect applications from various threats.

You possess a deep knowledge of Java and have experience with machine learning applications in security contexts. You are comfortable analyzing and evolving ingress-level defenses across CDN, edge, and internal infrastructure layers, ensuring that systems are robust against automated abuse and DDoS attacks.

You have a collaborative mindset and enjoy partnering with cross-functional teams, including Infrastructure, Security, and internal Safety teams, to balance security, performance, and user experience. Mentoring junior engineers is something you value, and you take pride in contributing to their professional growth.

Desirable

Experience with cloud infrastructure and services is a plus, as is familiarity with tools and frameworks that enhance security and performance. You are proactive in identifying potential vulnerabilities and are skilled at implementing effective mitigation strategies.

What you'll do

In this role, you will design, build, and operate systems that safeguard Reddit's availability and performance. Your primary focus will be on creating defenses against DDoS attacks and automated abuse, ensuring that Reddit remains a trusted platform for its users.

You will analyze traffic patterns and develop systems to detect, score, and mitigate malicious traffic in real time, working at both per-request and per-user granularity. Collaborating closely with the Infrastructure and Security teams, you will help to create a seamless user experience while maintaining high security standards.

You will also be responsible for mentoring junior engineers, guiding them through complex challenges and helping them develop their skills. Your contributions will directly impact the security posture of Reddit, making it a safer place for millions of users.
