Overview
Reflection is hiring a Member of Technical Staff - Pre-Training to research and build solutions for large language models. You'll work with Python and PyTorch to optimize training infrastructure and design scientific experiments. This position requires a graduate degree in Computer Science or related discipline.
Job Description
Who you are
You hold a graduate degree (MS or PhD) in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related discipline — your academic background has equipped you with a solid foundation in the principles of machine learning and artificial intelligence. You possess solid software engineering capabilities with experience building large-scale systems, demonstrating your ability to translate theoretical knowledge into practical applications. Your deep understanding of large-scale machine learning, especially as it relates to language models, distributed training, and scaling, positions you as a key contributor to our mission.
You are proficient in Python and have hands-on experience with deep learning frameworks, particularly PyTorch — your coding skills allow you to implement state-of-the-art methods from the deep learning literature effectively. You navigate trade-offs between research objectives and practical engineering realities, ensuring that your solutions are both innovative and feasible. You thrive in a fast-paced, high-agency startup environment with a bias toward action, and your strong communication capabilities enable you to work collaboratively with diverse teams.
What you'll do
In this role, you will research and build solutions across algorithms, scaling laws, data processing, optimizers, and model architecture — your work will directly contribute to advancing our understanding of scaling large language models and data efficiency. You will design and run scientific experiments, leading small research projects independently while collaborating on larger initiatives. Your responsibilities will include optimizing the training infrastructure for efficient scaling, contributing across the entire stack from low-level optimizations to high-level model design.
You will be expected to implement state-of-the-art methods from the deep learning literature, ensuring that our approaches remain at the forefront of AI research. As part of your role, you will also engage in discussions about trade-offs between research objectives and practical engineering realities, helping to shape the direction of our projects. Your contributions will be vital in pushing the boundaries of what is possible in AI and machine learning.
What we offer
At Reflection, we are committed to building open superintelligence and making it accessible to all — our team is composed of AI researchers and company builders from leading organizations like DeepMind, OpenAI, and Google Brain. We provide a supportive environment where you can thrive and grow, with fully paid parental leave for all new parents, including adoptive and surrogate journeys. Our benefits include financial support for family planning, paid time off when you need it, and relocation support.
We believe in optimizing your time and well-being, which is why we offer daily lunch and dinner, regular off-sites, and team celebrations. Join us in our mission to advance AI technology and make a meaningful impact in the world.
