Backend Engineer • Senior

Who you are

You have 7+ years of backend software development experience, building scalable and distributed systems in cloud environments. You understand the intricacies of managing services from design through deployment and have a wealth of experience in debugging complex issues that arise in production environments.

Your expertise in Java and Spring is deep — you've developed high-performance APIs that handle significant traffic and have strong opinions on service architecture, dependency injection, and testing strategies. You are also familiar with relational and NoSQL databases, such as CockroachDB and MongoDB, which allows you to make informed decisions about data management.

You thrive in collaborative environments, working closely with product managers, frontend engineers, and other stakeholders to translate product requirements into technical specifications. Your ability to communicate effectively ensures that everyone is aligned and that the final product meets user needs.

Mentoring junior engineers is something you value — you enjoy sharing your knowledge and fostering a culture of technical excellence within your team. You set high standards through RFC reviews and the code review process, ensuring that the team continuously improves and learns from each other.

Desirable

Experience with queuing or streaming technologies is a plus, as it complements your backend development skills and enhances your ability to build robust systems. Familiarity with cloud services beyond GCP and AWS can also be beneficial, as it broadens your understanding of the available tools and technologies.

What you'll do

In this role, you will design, develop, and maintain scalable and performant backend services and APIs using Java. You will lead technical design discussions, propose solutions, and make informed architectural decisions that align with Squarespace's overall strategy. Your contributions will directly impact the customer experience, particularly in the Domains product team, which is responsible for the entire domain lifecycle.

You will collaborate with product managers and frontend engineers to ensure that the backend services you develop meet the needs of the users. This involves translating product requirements into technical specifications and delivering impactful product experiences that empower creators to manage their domains with ease.

Setting a standard of technical excellence is crucial in this role. You will conduct RFC reviews and participate in the code review process, ensuring that the team adheres to best practices and continuously improves its output. Your mentorship will help junior engineers grow and develop their skills, fostering a supportive and collaborative team environment.
