Overview
Vercel is hiring an Engineering Manager to lead the team responsible for their CDN and edge caching systems. You'll focus on performance and reliability while managing a team of engineers. This role requires 8+ years of experience in large-scale distributed systems.
Job Description
Who you are
You have 8+ years of experience building and operating large-scale distributed systems — you've successfully managed critical infrastructure that ensures low latency and high reliability for customer requests. Your background includes at least 3 years of experience managing engineers, and you have a proven track record of leading teams in CDN, proxy, caching, or similar high-throughput environments.
You excel at translating business goals into technical strategies — you understand how to align your team's efforts with product and business objectives, creating a clear roadmap for success. Your leadership style fosters high trust and autonomy, allowing your team to thrive while you provide guidance and support.
You are comfortable coding when necessary, particularly for prototypes or to unblock your team — however, your primary focus is on delegation, coaching, and alignment to ensure your team operates efficiently and effectively.
Desirable
Experience managing managers is a plus, as you will be responsible for developing leadership within your team. Familiarity with performance optimization and cost efficiency in CDN systems will set you apart.
What you'll do
As the Engineering Manager for Vercel's CDN team, you will lead the development and operation of critical systems that power performance and reliability for every customer request. Your role involves setting the direction for the team, growing your engineers, and creating an environment that promotes high output and collaboration.
You will work closely with product and business teams to ensure that your engineering efforts align with overall company goals. This includes translating strategic objectives into actionable plans and guiding your team through the execution of these plans.
You will also be responsible for maintaining high standards of performance and reliability in the systems your team manages — this includes overseeing latency, reliability, and cost of goods sold (COGS) metrics to ensure that Vercel continues to deliver exceptional service to its customers.
In addition to technical leadership, you will focus on team development — conducting regular one-on-ones, providing feedback, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement. You will encourage your team to take ownership of their work while providing the support they need to succeed.
