Overview
Decagon is hiring an Engineering Manager for the Agent Orchestration team to lead the development of AI-driven customer interaction systems. You'll work with technologies like Python, Java, and AWS. This position requires significant technical leadership experience.
Job Description
Who you are
You have 5+ years of experience in engineering management, particularly in AI or machine learning environments — you've successfully led teams in building complex systems that enhance customer interactions. Your technical background includes proficiency in Python and Java, allowing you to engage deeply with your team's work and provide valuable insights. You understand the nuances of AI systems and have experience with orchestration logic and evaluation metrics, ensuring that the systems your team builds are both reliable and efficient.
You possess strong leadership skills, with a track record of mentoring engineers and fostering a collaborative team culture — you know how to balance technical guidance with empowering your team to take ownership of their projects. Your communication skills are top-notch, enabling you to articulate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. You thrive in fast-paced environments and are driven by a commitment to excellence and innovation.
Desirable
Experience with safety-critical systems or building guardrails for reliable AI interactions is a plus — you understand the importance of creating systems that not only perform well but also adhere to safety standards. Familiarity with cloud platforms like AWS will help you leverage existing infrastructure to enhance your team's productivity.
What you'll do
As the Engineering Manager for the Agent Orchestration team, you will lead the development of the core execution layer that powers every agent interaction — your role will involve overseeing the coordination of model reasoning and ensuring that agents behave reliably in real customer environments. You will work closely with product management and other engineering teams to define the technical roadmap and prioritize features that enhance customer experiences.
You will be responsible for conducting regular 1:1s with your team members, providing feedback, and supporting their professional development — your leadership will help shape the team's culture and drive high performance. You will also engage in hands-on technical work, contributing to the design and implementation of orchestration logic and evaluation systems.
Collaboration is key in this role, as you will partner with cross-functional teams to ensure that the systems you build align with customer needs and business objectives. You will also be involved in setting performance metrics and evaluating the success of the systems your team develops, ensuring continuous improvement and innovation.
