Who you are

You have a strong background in software engineering with at least 5 years of experience, particularly in building and maintaining data pipelines. Your expertise spans both interpreted languages like Python and Ruby on Rails, as well as compiled languages such as Java and C++. You possess a solid understanding of relational databases, and experience with data warehousing solutions like Snowflake is a bonus. You thrive in collaborative environments and are adept at problem-solving, ensuring that customer data flows smoothly and reliably.

You are familiar with the challenges of managing large datasets and have experience in optimizing data processing workflows. Your technical skills are complemented by your ability to communicate effectively with cross-functional teams, ensuring that engineering solutions align with business needs. You are passionate about data accessibility and reliability, and you understand the importance of maintaining high standards in data integrity and performance.

Desirable

Experience with cloud platforms and infrastructure management is a plus. Familiarity with ETL processes and tools will help you excel in this role. You are also open to learning new technologies and methodologies that can enhance the efficiency of data operations.

What you'll do

As a Staff Software Engineer on the ETL Platform team, you will be responsible for designing and implementing robust data pipelines that power the modern data stack for thousands of companies. You will work closely with your team to ensure that customer data arrives in their warehouses, canonical and ready to query, with no engineering or maintenance required. Your role will involve overseeing the core platform that backs Census’ sync engine, ensuring that data flows smoothly and on time.

You will lead projects such as the recent Sync Tracking overhaul, which enables the capture, storage, and processing of huge datasets. This project provides customers with complete visibility into their data flows, allowing them to verify that every record is getting where it needs to go. You will also manage a constantly scaling and resizing fleet of machines to handle the dynamic needs of our customers, acting as a shadow infrastructure team.

Collaboration is key in this role, as you will work with product managers, data analysts, and other engineers to define requirements and deliver high-quality solutions. You will participate in code reviews, mentor junior engineers, and contribute to the overall technical direction of the team. Your insights will help shape the future of our ETL platform, ensuring it meets the evolving needs of our customers.
