Network Engineer • Mid-Level

Who you are

You hold a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field and have at least 3 years of experience in optical networking technologies. Your background includes negotiations and business development with technology providers, particularly in colocation data centers and telecom construction services. You possess a deep understanding of fiber types, their applications, and physical characteristics, along with experience using standard testing tools like OSA, BERT, and OTDR.

You have hands-on experience with telecommunications at a carrier class level, including optical network infrastructure and transmission systems. Your knowledge extends to layer 2/3 routers and data services, making you well-equipped to handle complex networking challenges. Additionally, you are familiar with Dense Wave-Division Multiplexing (DWDM) and routing topology and architecture, which are essential for this role.

Your technical skills include basic scripting and programming, particularly in Python, Apps Script, and SQL. You understand networking fundamentals and troubleshooting at both Layer 1 and Layer 3, allowing you to effectively monitor and repair network issues as they arise. You thrive in collaborative environments and are eager to work with cross-functional teams to keep operational costs low.

Desirable

Experience working in a data center is a plus, as is knowledge of OSP, ISP, AC/DC power systems, and environmental controls. Familiarity with relay rack, cabinet, or cage construction will also be beneficial in this role.

What you'll do

As a Network Implementation Engineer at Google, you will execute the deployment, maintenance, and operations of private data networks worldwide. Your role will involve developing creative approaches to network management and collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure the network operates at peak potential. You will monitor the network continuously, addressing issues proactively and escalating them as necessary.

You will own network documentation, updating and maintaining network designs and plans to reflect current configurations and operational needs. Your responsibilities will also include ensuring that the network infrastructure supports Google's vast array of services, contributing to the overall efficiency and reliability of the systems in place.
