Who you are

You have 8+ years of experience working with Large Language Models (LLMs) and building intelligent agents — your background includes a strong understanding of core machine learning concepts and training algorithms, as well as best practices for evaluation. You are familiar with data science principles and basic statistical analysis concepts such as variance, p-value, and bias, which you apply in your work to ensure robust model performance.

Your expertise extends to essential concepts in AI, including tokens, context, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), and function calling — you understand how these elements contribute to the development of advanced AI systems. You are skilled in running quality interactions, aligning technical metrics with business goals, and implementing evaluation frameworks that drive continuous improvement.

You thrive in collaborative environments, working closely with customers, product management, and business development teams to prototype and iterate on solutions that meet critical business needs. Your ability to analyze results and formulate hypotheses for improvements is key to your success in this role.

Desirable

Experience with distributed computing and large-scale system design is a plus, as is familiarity with information retrieval and networking. You bring fresh ideas from various areas of technology, contributing to the innovative culture at Google Cloud.

What you'll do

As a Staff Software Engineer in Applied AI, you will work on projects that are critical to Google Cloud's needs — your responsibilities will include defining and implementing metrics that correspond to business problems, as well as designing and implementing evaluation frameworks and tooling for dataset creation and curation. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure that the solutions you develop are aligned with user needs and business objectives.

You will also have the opportunity to switch teams and projects, allowing you to explore different areas of interest within Google Cloud. Your role will involve mentoring junior engineers and contributing to the overall growth of the team, fostering an environment of learning and innovation.
