Overview

GrayMatter Robotics is seeking a Senior Design Engineer to join their Design & Mechatronics team in Los Angeles. You'll focus on robotic hardware design, conducting advanced simulations, and ensuring compliance with safety guidelines. This role requires expertise in AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and FEA.

Job Description

Who you are

You have 5+ years of experience in design engineering, particularly in robotics or related fields — your background includes designing hardware and mechanisms for robotic systems, ensuring performance and reliability in your designs. You are proficient in AutoCAD and SolidWorks, allowing you to create detailed designs and prototypes that meet industry standards.

Your expertise extends to conducting complex Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and thermal simulations — you understand how to validate structural integrity and predict failure modes, optimizing designs before fabrication. You are familiar with Design for Manufacturing (DFM) principles, particularly for End-of-Arm Tooling (EOAT), and you ensure compliance with ISO/TR 20218-1 safety guidelines in your work.

You thrive in collaborative environments, working closely with cross-functional teams to drive product improvements — your communication skills enable you to articulate design concepts and collaborate effectively with engineers and stakeholders. You are detail-oriented and committed to delivering high-quality designs that enhance the functionality and safety of robotic systems.

Desirable

Experience with advanced robotics systems and a strong understanding of manufacturing processes would be beneficial — familiarity with industry standards and safety regulations is a plus. You are also open to learning new technologies and methodologies that can enhance your design capabilities.

What you'll do

As a Senior Design Engineer at GrayMatter Robotics, you will lead the design of robotic hardware systems — your role involves exploring, developing, and testing novel systems in-house for implementation in the field. You will focus on creating innovative solutions that improve the quality of life for shop floor workers while increasing production capacity.

You will conduct advanced simulations and structural analysis to validate your designs — this includes performing FEA and thermal simulations to ensure that your designs can withstand operational stresses and meet performance criteria. You will also collaborate with the Design & Mechatronics team to refine existing products and develop new concepts that align with customer needs.

Your responsibilities will include ensuring that all designs comply with safety guidelines and industry standards — you will work closely with manufacturing teams to implement DFM practices, ensuring that your designs are not only innovative but also practical for production.

What we offer

GrayMatter Robotics offers a competitive salary range of $135,000 - $150,000 USD plus equity — we provide comprehensive benefits including unlimited PTO, a 401(k) plan with employer match, and regular offsite events to foster team collaboration. You will have access to a discretionary fund aimed at enhancing productivity and supporting your professional development.

Join us in our mission to empower manufacturers with cutting-edge robotic solutions — your work will directly impact the efficiency and safety of the manufacturing industry, making a difference in the lives of workers. We encourage you to apply even if your experience doesn't match every requirement, as we value diverse perspectives and backgrounds.
