Overview

Microsoft is hiring a Principal Mechanical Engineer to provide technical leadership for datacenter mechanical systems. You'll work with AutoCAD and Azure to drive global technical direction. This position requires extensive experience in datacenter mechanical infrastructure.

Job Description

Who you are

You are a seasoned Mechanical Engineer with extensive experience in datacenter mechanical infrastructure — you have a deep understanding of cooling technologies and large-scale cooling plants, and you are passionate about optimizing mechanical systems for efficiency and reliability. Your expertise allows you to serve as a global Subject Matter Expert (SME) for mechanical systems, guiding both internal teams and external consultants in best practices and innovative solutions.

You possess strong leadership skills and the ability to influence technical direction across a diverse fleet of datacenters — your collaborative approach enables you to work effectively with cross-functional teams, ensuring that all mechanical systems align with Microsoft’s strategic goals. You are committed to fostering an inclusive work environment and positively impacting the culture within your team.

Your technical acumen is complemented by your ability to communicate complex concepts clearly — you can articulate the intricacies of mechanical systems to stakeholders at all levels, ensuring that everyone understands the importance of robust infrastructure in supporting cloud operations. You thrive in a fast-paced environment where you can leverage your problem-solving skills to tackle challenges head-on.

Desirable

Experience with advanced cooling strategies and innovative mechanical designs is a plus — you are always looking for ways to improve existing systems and implement cutting-edge technologies that enhance performance and sustainability.

What you'll do

In this role, you will lead the technical direction for mechanical systems across Microsoft’s global datacenter portfolio — you will set standards and best practices for cooling equipment and strategies, ensuring that all projects meet the highest quality and efficiency benchmarks. You will collaborate with engineering teams to design and implement mechanical systems that support the scalability and reliability of Microsoft’s cloud services.

You will be responsible for mentoring and developing internal mechanical SMEs, providing guidance and support as they navigate complex projects — your leadership will help cultivate a culture of excellence and continuous improvement within the team. You will also engage with external engineering consultants to ensure that all mechanical designs align with Microsoft’s operational standards and sustainability goals.

Your role will involve conducting thorough assessments of existing mechanical systems and identifying opportunities for optimization — you will analyze performance data and implement changes that enhance efficiency and reduce operational costs. You will also stay abreast of industry trends and emerging technologies, integrating innovative solutions into Microsoft’s datacenter operations.

What we offer

Microsoft offers a dynamic work environment where you can make a significant impact on the future of cloud infrastructure — you will have the opportunity to work on large-scale projects that power some of the world’s largest online services. We provide competitive compensation and benefits, along with a commitment to professional development and career growth.

Join us in our mission to empower every person and organization on the planet to achieve more — your contributions will help shape the future of cloud operations and innovation at Microsoft.
