Overview

SpaceX is hiring a Senior Materials Engineer to lead the development of silicon crystal growth processes for Starlink solar cells. You'll be responsible for equipment specification, quality control, and process development. This position requires 5+ years of experience in semiconductor crystal growth manufacturing.

Job Description

Who you are

You have a Bachelor's degree in materials science, chemical engineering, or a related STEM field, and bring over 5 years of experience in semiconductor crystal growth manufacturing, research, or characterization. Your expertise allows you to tackle complex materials and processing challenges, particularly in silicon crystal growth and wafer production. You are skilled in specifying and implementing metrology tools for quality control, ensuring that silicon ingot and wafer quality specifications are met through rigorous testing and performance evaluation.

You possess strong problem-solving abilities, particularly in leading root cause failure investigations to resolve process issues. Your experience has equipped you to push material and crystal growth process limits, enabling higher photovoltaic efficiency. You thrive in collaborative environments, working closely with leadership and stakeholders to drive scale-up plans from research and development to production.

What you'll do

In this role, you will own the full lifecycle of equipment specification, validation, and process development for silicon ingot and wafer production. You will specify and implement in-process and off-line metrology tools for quality control, ensuring that all specifications are met through comprehensive testing and evaluation. Your leadership will be crucial in conducting root cause failure investigations to resolve any process issues that arise, and you will be responsible for pushing the limits of material and crystal growth processes to enhance photovoltaic efficiency.

You will collaborate with various teams to drive scale-up plans from R&D to production, ensuring that the transition is smooth and efficient. Your role will involve continuous improvement of processes and specifications, contributing to the overall success of the Starlink project. You will be at the forefront of innovation, helping to develop technologies that will enable human life on Mars.
