Backend Engineer • Senior

Who you are

You have 5+ years of backend engineering experience, particularly in building production systems that scale effectively. You’ve owned services from design through deployment and have navigated complex distributed systems issues, ensuring high availability and performance.

Your expertise lies in Java and Spring — you’ve developed high-throughput APIs that handle significant transaction volumes and have a solid understanding of service architecture, dependency injection, and testing strategies. You are comfortable leading teams through ambiguity and are adept at solving open-ended problems.

You possess strong collaboration skills, working closely with product management, design, and analytics teams to support the product development lifecycle. You can articulate technical constraints and partner on decisions that consider risks and trade-offs effectively.

You proactively identify project, process, technology, or business issues and advocate for solutions, leading efforts to resolve them. You foster a culture of quality and ownership within your team, setting and improving code review and design standards.

You are committed to developing talent on your team, mentoring engineers, and ensuring everyone feels supported throughout the delivery process. You understand the importance of metrics and monitoring, supporting the operations and availability of your team’s artifacts.

Desirable

Experience with cloud technologies and microservices architecture would be a plus, as well as familiarity with CI/CD practices and tools.

What you'll do

In this role, you will be responsible for owning and delivering quarterly goals for your team, ensuring that everyone is aligned and supported throughout the delivery process. You will lead engineers through complex challenges, helping them navigate ambiguity and develop innovative solutions.

You will collaborate with peers and stakeholders throughout the product development lifecycle, participating in ideation sessions and providing insights on technical constraints. Your ability to advocate for your team and lead in solving issues will be crucial to the success of your projects.

You will monitor and support the operations of your team’s artifacts, creating and tracking metrics to ensure high availability and performance. Your leadership will help foster a culture of quality and ownership, encouraging your team to uphold high standards in code reviews and design practices.

You will also play a key role in developing talent within your team, providing mentorship and guidance to help engineers grow in their careers. Your contributions will directly impact the success of Affirm’s integrations with Enterprise Merchants and Partners, driving improvements in the checkout experience.
