Overview

Amazon is hiring a Senior Applied Scientist to optimize inventory and distribution systems within the grocery replenishment organization. You'll utilize Java, Python, and advanced mathematical optimization techniques to solve complex supply chain challenges. This role requires expertise in machine learning and optimization methodologies.

Job Description

Who you are

You are an experienced applied scientist with a strong background in mathematical optimization and machine learning. With at least 5 years of experience, you have a proven track record of designing and implementing scientific solutions to complex problems at scale. You possess deep knowledge of optimization techniques including linear, quadratic, and mixed-integer programming, and you are comfortable applying these methods to real-world scenarios. Your programming skills in languages such as Java, Python, MATLAB, and R enable you to prototype and deploy models effectively. You thrive in collaborative environments, working closely with software engineering teams to enhance decision support tools and ensure high-quality production code.

You are passionate about leveraging data and algorithms to drive business solutions. Your analytical mindset allows you to approach problems systematically, and you enjoy experimenting with different modeling techniques to find the best solutions. You are also committed to improving code quality and providing support for production-level issues, ensuring that the systems you develop are robust and reliable. You understand the importance of communication and collaboration, and you are eager to share your knowledge with your team.

Desirable

Experience with control theory and network design is a plus, as is familiarity with simulation techniques. You may have worked in supply chain or logistics environments, giving you insights into the unique challenges faced in these areas. A background in grocery or retail supply chains would be advantageous, as would any experience with large-scale data processing and analysis.

What you'll do

In this role, you will own the inventory optimization and distribution optimization processes for Amazon's grocery supply chain. You will design and develop advanced mathematical models that address both strategic and tactical needs, driving business and technical solutions. Your work will involve applying various optimization techniques to create optimal or near-optimal methodologies for decision support tools. You will research, prototype, and simulate these models, ensuring they are effective and efficient in real-world applications.

You will collaborate closely with software engineering teams, writing well-tested Java code for scientific modules within engineering-managed services. Your responsibilities will include providing time-sensitive on-call support and addressing high-severity issues when they arise in production code. You will also focus on improving the quality of legacy scientific production code, ensuring that it meets current standards and performs optimally.

Your role will require you to stay updated on the latest advancements in optimization and machine learning, continuously seeking ways to enhance the systems you work on. You will participate in cross-functional teams, contributing your expertise to drive innovation and improve operational efficiency within the grocery replenishment organization.

What we offer

Amazon provides a competitive salary range of CAD 195,900.00 - 327,200.00 annually, along with comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, and vision insurance. You will have access to a Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) and a Deferred Profit Sharing Plan (DPSP), as well as paid time off to support your work-life balance. We foster a culture of collaboration and continuous learning, encouraging you to grow your skills and advance your career within the company. Join us at Amazon, where you can make a significant impact on the grocery supply chain and help shape the future of grocery replenishment.
