Apple is hiring a Senior Embedded Engineer to define and develop firmware platforms for their products. You'll work with embedded technologies and coding in C/C++. This position requires 5+ years of experience in firmware development.

Job Description

Who you are

You have 5+ years of experience in embedded firmware development, particularly in RTOS environments — you've successfully defined and developed firmware platforms for various products, ensuring they meet both performance and reliability standards. Your strong coding skills in C and C++ have been demonstrated in production environments, where you've tackled complex challenges and delivered robust solutions.

Your expertise extends to designing and implementing firmware platforms, including device drivers, communications, middleware, and application state machines — you understand the intricacies of hardware/software systems and how they interact within Apple products. You have experience with hard real-time systems and ARM architectures, which allows you to optimize firmware for performance and efficiency.

You are familiar with common serial communication protocols such as SPI, I2C, and UART — your knowledge in these areas enables you to develop firmware that effectively communicates with various hardware components. A basic understanding of USB protocol is also part of your skill set, and you may have experience with USB device and host software development, which adds to your versatility as an engineer.

Your background may include working with motion or environmental sensing technology, and you have a good understanding of how these systems are architected — this experience allows you to contribute to innovative projects that require precise control and feedback mechanisms. You are genuinely passionate about innovation and product development, and you thrive in collaborative environments where you can work with cross-functional teams to bring ideas from inception to delivery.

Desirable

While not required, experience with motion/motor control systems, such as those used in automation or surgical applications, would be a plus — this knowledge can enhance your contributions to projects that involve complex mechanical systems.

What you'll do

In this role, you will be responsible for architecting, designing, developing, and maintaining firmware systems for Apple products — your work will directly impact the functionality and user experience of the devices. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to shape firmware features from definition to launch, ensuring that all aspects of the firmware align with product goals and customer needs.

You will lead the development of firmware platforms, focusing on performance optimization and reliability — your ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues will be crucial as you work to enhance existing systems and develop new features. You will also be involved in defining the technical direction of firmware projects, making decisions that will influence the overall architecture and design.

Your role will require you to stay updated on the latest advancements in embedded technologies and firmware development practices — you will be expected to bring innovative ideas to the table and contribute to a culture of continuous improvement within the team. You will mentor junior engineers, sharing your knowledge and expertise to help them grow in their roles.
