Who you are

You have extensive experience in backend engineering, ideally with a focus on toolchain observability and acceleration. You understand the intricacies of software delivery excellence and have a proven track record of improving DORA capabilities, including continuous delivery. Your expertise in Java and Python allows you to build robust systems that enhance developer productivity and streamline CI processes.

You are familiar with various build tools such as Gradle, Apache Maven, and npm, and you understand how to leverage these tools to optimize build and test acceleration. Your experience includes working with both CI and local builds, ensuring that you can troubleshoot and optimize feedback loops effectively. You are a collaborative team player who values understanding different perspectives and challenges.

You approach your work with a clear sense of purpose, ensuring that every action you take is deliberate and focused on achieving meaningful outcomes. You are comfortable working in a remote-first environment and can seamlessly collaborate with colleagues across different time zones.

Desirable

Experience with additional programming languages or frameworks is a plus, as is familiarity with open-source projects and community engagement. You are eager to contribute to the OSS community and understand the importance of continuous improvement in software development practices.

What you'll do

As a Staff Backend Engineer at Gradle, you will play a crucial role in enhancing the Develocity platform, which is designed to help software teams adopt and improve their delivery capabilities. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to identify opportunities for optimization and implement solutions that drive efficiency in software delivery processes.

Your responsibilities will include designing and implementing backend systems that support the Develocity platform, ensuring that they are scalable, reliable, and performant. You will collaborate with product managers, engineers, and other stakeholders to define requirements and translate them into technical specifications.

You will also be responsible for troubleshooting complex issues that arise in the build and test processes, using your deep understanding of the tools and technologies involved. Your ability to analyze performance metrics and user feedback will be essential in guiding improvements and ensuring that the platform meets the needs of its users.

In addition to your technical contributions, you will have opportunities for growth in both technical and leadership responsibilities. You will mentor junior engineers, sharing your knowledge and expertise to help them develop their skills and advance their careers.
