Who you are

You have 5+ years of backend engineering experience building production systems at scale — you've owned services from design through deployment and have navigated the complexities of debugging distributed systems. Your deep expertise in Java and Spring allows you to ship high-throughput APIs that handle millions of requests, and you have strong opinions on service architecture, dependency injection, and testing strategies. You are comfortable working with REST APIs and have experience with Docker for containerization, ensuring that your applications are portable and scalable. Familiarity with AWS services is essential, as you will be leveraging cloud infrastructure to support the backend services for Life360's devices. You thrive in a remote-first environment and are excited about collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver impactful solutions.

Desirable

Experience with telemetry data processing and real-time data management is a plus, as is knowledge of API gateways and integration with mobile and firmware products. You understand the importance of data security and have implemented best practices in your previous roles. A background in working with high-frequency data streams will set you apart, as you will be managing a massive fleet of connected devices.

What you'll do

In this role, you will be responsible for developing and maintaining backend services that manage Life360's connected devices. You will work on systems that ingest, process, and serve real-time state for hardware units globally, ensuring that the services run at scale. Your contributions will directly impact the user experience for approximately 91.6 million monthly active users, as you integrate with API gateways and support cross-team product needs. You will collaborate closely with mobile, firmware, and analytics teams to ensure seamless coordination and functionality across platforms. Your role will involve designing and implementing robust APIs that facilitate communication between devices and the cloud, optimizing performance, and ensuring reliability.

You will also participate in code reviews and contribute to the overall architecture of the backend systems, ensuring that best practices are followed and that the codebase remains maintainable and scalable. As part of a remote-first team, you will engage in regular communication with your colleagues, sharing insights and collaborating on solutions to complex challenges. You will have the opportunity to mentor junior engineers, fostering a culture of learning and growth within the team.
