Overview
MongoDB is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to lead the Networking & Observability team. You'll focus on enhancing distributed database communication and observability features. This role requires 10+ years of experience in building distributed systems.
Job Description
Who you are
You have over 10 years of experience building distributed systems — you've successfully delivered and deployed products while collaborating with cross-team stakeholders. Your expertise includes creating production-level code that serves a large user base, ensuring robust design structures and rigorous testing practices. You are experienced in improving resource utilization and building observability features that enhance system performance. Your background includes working closely with open-source technologies, and you have a strong understanding of networking principles and observability tools.
You are passionate about contributing to the development of a better database system — you thrive in environments where you can influence performance and robustness at the core of the technology stack. You enjoy collaborating with a diverse team of engineers and are comfortable operating close to the bottom of the stack, where your contributions can have a significant impact on the overall engineering efficiency.
Desirable
Experience with OpenTelemetry is a plus, as it aligns with our current initiatives to accelerate issue investigation and performance bottleneck resolution. Familiarity with performance testing and proof of concept (POC) development will also be beneficial in this role. You are excited about the opportunity to work in a team that values innovation and continuous improvement.
What you'll do
As a Staff Software Engineer on the Networking & Observability team, you will lead efforts to enhance MongoDB's networking capabilities — your work will focus on improving communication between distributed processes and making these interactions easily observable. You will be responsible for designing and implementing low-overhead observability features that provide insights into system performance and resource utilization. Your role will involve collaborating with other engineers to develop proofs of concept and conduct performance tests for new architectural directions in our networking stack.
You will also play a key role in integrating OpenTelemetry into our systems — this will involve working closely with team members to ensure that observability features are effectively implemented and utilized. You will mentor junior engineers, sharing your knowledge and experience to help them grow in their roles. Your contributions will directly influence the performance and reliability of our open-source database, making it a better tool for users worldwide.
What we offer
MongoDB offers a competitive salary range for this role in the U.S., between $137,000 and $270,000 USD, along with a comprehensive benefits package. We provide a supportive work environment that values diversity and inclusion, offering parental leave, fertility and adoption assistance, and mental health counseling. Our team is dedicated to building a culture of collaboration and innovation, where every engineer has the opportunity to make a meaningful impact. Join us in our mission to build a faster, more reliable, and exceptionally observable database system.
