Overview

Netflix is hiring a Senior Security Software Engineer for their Detection Engineering team to enhance detection frameworks and minimize risks. You'll work with technologies like AWS, Python, and Docker. This position requires significant experience in detection engineering.

Job Description

Who you are

You have significant experience writing detections at scale using a detection-as-code approach — you've developed and implemented detection strategies that effectively identify malicious activities across complex systems. Your background includes a strong understanding of security principles and practices, enabling you to analyze high-risk attack paths and create focused detections that reduce risk to the business.

You are proficient in using various tools and technologies, including AWS, Python, and Docker, to build and maintain detection frameworks — your expertise in Elasticsearch and Kubernetes allows you to optimize detection processes and ensure they run efficiently on cloud platforms. You have a collaborative mindset, working closely with cross-functional teams to share insights and improve overall security posture.

You possess excellent problem-solving skills and a risk-based prioritization mindset — you focus your efforts on generating the largest impact for the organization, ensuring that the most critical threats are addressed promptly. Your creativity and intuition drive you to explore innovative solutions to complex security challenges.

Desirable

Experience with Splunk and Terraform is a plus, as it enhances your ability to manage and automate detection processes effectively. Familiarity with incident response and threat intelligence will further strengthen your contributions to the Detection Engineering team.

What you'll do

As a Senior Security Software Engineer on the Detection Engineering team, you will be responsible for maturing and expanding our detection frameworks and platforms — your role will involve creating and continually improving detections that run on our own platforms to proactively surface malicious or anomalous behavior. You will analyze high-risk attack paths and collaborate with stakeholder teams to develop compensating detective controls that shorten the time to discovery.

You will leverage your technical expertise to write detections at scale, ensuring they are effective and efficient — your contributions will help minimize risk to Netflix by identifying attacker presence or activity early in the process. You will work closely with the larger Detection and Response team, which includes Attacker Emulation and Security Incident Response, to enhance our overall security capabilities.

Your role will also involve mentoring junior engineers and sharing your knowledge with the team — you will foster a culture of continuous improvement and collaboration, encouraging innovative thinking and problem-solving. You will participate in regular reviews of detection strategies and contribute to the development of best practices within the team.

What we offer

At Netflix, we offer a dynamic and inclusive work environment where creativity and innovation thrive — you will be part of a team that is passionate about pushing the boundaries of storytelling and technology. We provide competitive compensation and benefits, along with opportunities for professional growth and development.

You will have the chance to work on cutting-edge security technologies and contribute to the protection of our platform and users — your work will have a direct impact on the safety and security of our services. We encourage you to apply even if your experience doesn't match every requirement, as we value diverse perspectives and backgrounds.
