Nominal is hiring a Roboticist In Residence to bring deep robotics expertise to their test and autonomy stack. You'll work hands-on with various robotic systems, optimizing performance and integrating complex software. This role requires a strong technical background in robotics and system integration.

Job Description

Who you are

You have deep expertise in robotics, particularly in system integration and perception pipelines — you understand the intricacies of bridging advanced robotics systems with real-world test infrastructure. Your experience includes debugging CAN bus issues on flight controllers and optimizing reinforcement learning loop performance, showcasing your hands-on technical skills.

You are comfortable visualizing test runs using tools like Nominal Connect, Foxglove, Rerun, or Mujoco — your familiarity with these platforms allows you to effectively analyze and improve robotic systems. You thrive in customer-facing roles, where your technical knowledge meets real-world applications, helping clients validate their autonomy and perception capabilities.

Your background includes working with various robotic systems such as drones, UGVs, and manipulators — you have a passion for exploring new technologies and pushing the boundaries of what is possible in robotics. You are a problem solver at heart, eager to tackle challenges that arise in the intersection of hardware and software.

What you'll do

As a Roboticist In Residence at Nominal, you will serve as the in-house expert for robotic system integration — your role will involve hands-on work across a diverse customer base, accelerating their ability to validate autonomy and perception. You will collaborate closely with engineers and operators, ensuring that the software infrastructure meets the demands of advanced hardware systems.

You will engage in a mix of R&D, field deployment, and product shaping — your contributions will directly impact the performance and reliability of robotic systems. You will be responsible for optimizing the integration of complex autonomy software, ensuring that it operates seamlessly with high-rate telemetry data.

Your role will also involve debugging and troubleshooting issues that arise during testing and deployment — you will need to think critically and creatively to find solutions that enhance system performance. You will work in a fast-paced environment, where your ability to iterate quickly without sacrificing safety or precision will be crucial.

What we offer

At Nominal, you will be part of a small, fast-moving team of engineers and operators who own problems end-to-end — you will have the opportunity to work on cutting-edge technology that serves top-tier commercial and defense customers. We foster a collaborative environment where your expertise will be valued and your contributions recognized.

We encourage you to apply even if your experience doesn't match every requirement — we believe that diverse teams build better products and welcome candidates from various backgrounds. Join us in our mission to enable hardware engineers to push the boundaries of advanced technology with speed, safety, and precision.
