Overview
Nuro is seeking a Senior/Staff Software Engineer to implement metrics for evaluating the driving behavior of their autonomous vehicle technology. You'll work with Python and machine learning models to ensure safety in driving behavior. This role requires experience in behavior planning and prediction systems.
Job Description
Who you are
You have 5+ years of experience in software engineering, particularly in developing or verifying behavior planning and prediction systems for autonomous vehicles. Your collaborative nature allows you to work effectively with cross-functional teams, including Systems, Onboard Software, Simulation, Product, and Operations. You are passionate about leveraging technology to enhance safety and performance in self-driving systems.
Your expertise in Python is complemented by a strong understanding of machine learning models and safety metrics. You have a proven track record of implementing generalizable metrics that evaluate complex systems, and you thrive in environments that challenge your technical skills and problem-solving abilities. You are committed to fostering an inclusive and psychologically safe workplace for all team members.
Desirable
Experience with autonomous vehicle technology or robotics is a plus, as is familiarity with synthetic and log simulation testing. You are comfortable evaluating metrics on various tests, including closed-course testing data and third-party accident reconstructions. Your ability to communicate complex ideas clearly and effectively makes you a valuable team member.
What you'll do
In this role, you will develop and implement metrics in Python to verify the driving behavior of the Nuro Driver. You will leverage machine learning models and existing safety metrics from literature to evaluate the end-to-end driving behavior in various operational design domains (ODD). Your work will involve evaluating these metrics through synthetic tests, log simulations, and real-world data analysis.
You will collaborate closely with multiple teams to ensure that the metrics you develop are robust and applicable across different scenarios. This includes working with Systems to understand the technical requirements and with Product to align on safety standards. You will also engage with Operations to ensure that the metrics are practical and can be implemented effectively in real-world applications.
Your contributions will directly impact the safety and reliability of Nuro's autonomous vehicles, helping to pave the way for broader adoption of self-driving technology. You will be expected to stay updated on the latest advancements in machine learning and safety metrics, continuously improving the evaluation processes.
