Overview

OpenAI is hiring a Lead Security Engineer to drive offensive research and map vulnerabilities in advanced AI systems. You'll work on threat modeling and engage with external partners. This role requires expertise in security practices and cryptography.

Job Description

Who you are

You have a strong background in security research, particularly in trusted computing and cryptography, with a focus on advanced AI systems. Your experience includes hands-on threat modeling and vulnerability assessment, allowing you to identify and mitigate systemic risks effectively. You are comfortable engaging with external partners, including government stakeholders, and can translate complex technical concepts into actionable insights. You thrive in collaborative environments, orchestrating inputs across research, engineering, security, and policy to produce impactful outcomes. Your ability to prioritize and characterize vulnerabilities across various layers of AI systems sets you apart as a leader in the field.

Desirable

Experience with offensive security research and red teaming is a plus, as is familiarity with AI lifecycle security considerations. You may also have a background in working with heterogeneous infrastructures, including compilers and runtimes, which enhances your ability to address cross-layer vulnerabilities.

What you'll do

In this role, you will lead efforts to build an AI Stack Threat Map that spans the entire AI lifecycle, from data collection to deployment. You will deliver comprehensive reports detailing vulnerabilities and their mitigations, focusing on systemic risks that could impact AI systems. Your responsibilities will include performing hands-on threat modeling and exploitation research, ensuring that OpenAI's technology remains secure against emerging threats. You will serve as the primary technical representative for external partners, aligning deliverables with technical objectives and milestones. Your work will directly contribute to fostering a robust security culture within OpenAI, supporting the mission to ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity.
