Overview

Relativity is seeking a Principal Mechanical Design Engineer for their Factory Automation team to develop tools and fixtures for rocket production. You'll work with AutoCAD and SolidWorks to design innovative manufacturing solutions. This role requires extensive experience in mechanical design and engineering.

Job Description

Who you are

You have a strong background in mechanical engineering with at least 10 years of experience in design and manufacturing environments — you've successfully led projects from concept through production, demonstrating your ability to solve complex engineering challenges. Your expertise in CAD software, particularly AutoCAD and SolidWorks, allows you to create detailed designs and specifications that meet rigorous industry standards.

You possess a deep understanding of manufacturing processes and factory automation — your experience includes designing tooling and fixtures that enhance production efficiency and quality. You thrive in collaborative environments, working closely with cross-functional teams to ensure that designs are feasible and align with production capabilities.

Your problem-solving skills are exceptional — you approach challenges with creativity and technical rigor, always seeking innovative solutions that push the boundaries of what's possible in manufacturing. You are comfortable navigating ambiguity and can adapt to changing project requirements while maintaining a focus on delivering high-quality results.

You are passionate about advancing technology and innovation in the aerospace industry — your work contributes to the development of cutting-edge rockets that will shape the future of space exploration. You understand the importance of safety and compliance in engineering design and ensure that all your work adheres to relevant regulations and standards.

Desirable

Experience with advanced manufacturing techniques such as additive manufacturing or robotics would be a plus — you are eager to learn and apply new technologies that can improve production processes. Familiarity with project management methodologies will help you effectively lead initiatives and coordinate with various stakeholders.

What you'll do

As a Principal Mechanical Design Engineer at Relativity, you will lead the design and development of tooling and fixtures for the Terran R rocket production — your role is critical in ensuring that manufacturing processes are efficient and effective. You will collaborate with engineers and manufacturing teams to identify needs and translate them into innovative design solutions that enhance production capabilities.

You will be responsible for creating detailed engineering drawings and specifications using AutoCAD and SolidWorks — your designs will be used to manufacture critical components that support the assembly of rockets. You will also conduct design reviews and provide technical guidance to junior engineers, fostering a culture of learning and collaboration within the team.

Your role will involve working closely with the manufacturing team to ensure that designs are practical and can be implemented effectively — you will participate in prototype testing and validation to refine designs based on real-world feedback. You will also be involved in continuous improvement initiatives, identifying opportunities to enhance tooling and fixture designs for better performance and reliability.

You will play a key role in project planning and execution, ensuring that timelines and budgets are met while maintaining high standards of quality — your leadership will help drive the success of the Factory Automation team and contribute to the overall mission of Relativity Space.

What we offer

Relativity offers a competitive salary range of $196,000—$253,000 USD, reflecting your experience and expertise in the field. You will have the opportunity to work in a dynamic and innovative environment where your contributions will have a direct impact on the future of space exploration. We provide a collaborative culture that values creativity and technical excellence, allowing you to leave your mark on the product and the process.

Join us at Relativity Space, where you will be part of a team that is redefining the aerospace industry — your work will help shape the future of rocket manufacturing and contribute to groundbreaking advancements in science and exploration. We encourage you to apply even if your experience doesn't match every requirement, as we value diverse perspectives and backgrounds.
