Overview

SpaceX is seeking a Battery Engineer to optimize battery cells for the Starlink satellite program. You'll work on defining and improving battery performance and lifetime, requiring expertise in materials science and chemical engineering.

Who you are

You have a Bachelor's degree in Physics, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or another STEM discipline, along with 3+ years of hands-on experience in battery technology. Your background includes a deep understanding of battery cell development and optimization, and you are skilled in identifying degradation modes and enhancing pack-level operations. You thrive in collaborative environments, working closely with cross-functional teams to ensure high-reliability operation of battery cells in orbit. Your analytical skills enable you to conduct thorough testing and characterization of battery cells, and you are adept at defining manufacturing requirements and specifications for production cells.

Desirable

Experience with semi-empirical and physics-based modeling of battery cells is a plus, as is familiarity with abuse testing and thermal analysis. You are passionate about advancing battery technology and are eager to contribute to innovative projects that push the boundaries of space exploration.

What you'll do

As a Battery Engineer at SpaceX, you will guide the development roadmap for battery cells, focusing on maximizing energy density and lifetime. You will benchmark existing and future cell technologies against the specific requirements of the Starlink program, ensuring that every gram of battery mass is utilized effectively. Your role will involve identifying primary degradation modes and optimizing pack-level operations through rigorous testing and analysis. You will conduct cell teardowns and prepare samples for materials characterization, collaborating with teams responsible for abuse testing and on-orbit operations. Additionally, you will expand cell modeling capabilities and define the manufacturing requirements for production cells, contributing to the overall success of the Starlink satellite program.
