Job Description

Who you are

You have a strong background in mechanical engineering with experience in thermal protection systems — you've worked on projects that require innovative solutions to complex thermal challenges. Your expertise in AutoCAD and SolidWorks allows you to create detailed mechanical designs that meet rigorous performance standards. You are familiar with thermal-structural modeling and have a solid understanding of qualification testing processes. Your analytical skills enable you to troubleshoot and resolve issues effectively, ensuring that the hardware meets the necessary specifications.

You thrive in collaborative environments and enjoy working closely with production teams to address challenges on the floor — your ability to communicate technical concepts clearly helps bridge the gap between design and manufacturing. You are driven by a passion for aerospace and are excited about contributing to projects that push the boundaries of technology. You understand the importance of data-driven optimizations and are eager to analyze post-flight conditions to improve future designs.

What you'll do

As a Mechanical Engineer on the Thermal Hardware team, you will be responsible for developing, testing, and qualifying new thermal protection system solutions for the Starship architecture. You will own the outcome of thermal challenges, setting up end-to-end solutions from initial concept to flying hardware. Your role will involve analyzing and troubleshooting post-flight conditions on vehicle heat shields, driving necessary changes and improvements based on your findings. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure that the thermal hardware integrates seamlessly with other systems on the Starship.

You will also participate in the continuous improvement of the thermal protection system, leveraging your engineering expertise to refine existing designs and processes. Your contributions will play a crucial role in ensuring the success of SpaceX's missions, as you work in an exciting environment that combines office work with hands-on production activities. You will have the opportunity to engage in qualification testing and contribute to the overall mission of enabling human life on Mars.

What we offer

At SpaceX, you will be part of a team that is dedicated to making space exploration a reality. We offer competitive compensation and benefits, along with the chance to work on groundbreaking technologies that have the potential to change the future of humanity. You will be surrounded by talented individuals who share your passion for aerospace and innovation, creating a collaborative and inspiring workplace.
