Job Description

Who you are

You have 5+ years of experience in backend engineering, with a strong focus on building scalable production systems. Your expertise includes managing complex distributed systems and ensuring high availability and performance. You are comfortable collaborating with both technical and non-technical team members, bridging the gap between engineering and other functions such as operations and product management.

Your deep knowledge of Java and cloud technologies allows you to design and implement robust backend solutions. You have experience with containerization and orchestration tools like Docker and Kubernetes, which are essential for modern cloud environments. Familiarity with Google infrastructure, including tools like Flume and Borg, is a plus, as it aligns with the technologies used at Waymo.

You are proactive and product-minded, always looking for ways to improve existing systems and processes. Your curiosity about Level 4 autonomous driving drives you to stay updated on industry trends and best practices. You thrive in cross-functional teams, where you can leverage your technical skills to solve complex problems and deliver impactful solutions.

Desirable

Experience with operations tooling or developer productivity tools will set you apart. If you have worked with optimization or operations research schedulers, that would be a bonus. Familiarity with geographic information systems, such as pathfinding and mapping technologies, will also be beneficial in this role.

What you'll do

In this role, you will lead the development of mission-critical tools and systems that support Waymo's commercialization efforts. You will collaborate closely with engineering, product, and operations teams to ensure that the systems you build meet the needs of the business and enhance the user experience. Your responsibilities will include designing system architectures, overseeing implementation, and ensuring that all solutions are scalable and maintainable.

You will also be involved in mentoring junior engineers, providing guidance on best practices in software development and system design. Your leadership will help foster a culture of collaboration and innovation within the team, encouraging team members to share ideas and contribute to the overall success of the projects.

As part of the commercialization team, you will work on cross-cutting problems that require collaboration across various functions. This includes engaging with legal, partnerships, and policy teams to ensure that the systems you develop comply with regulations and meet business requirements. You will play a key role in shaping the future of transportation by building the infrastructure that supports Waymo's autonomous ride-hail service.

What we offer

Waymo offers a dynamic work environment where you can make a significant impact on the future of transportation. You will have the opportunity to work with cutting-edge technologies and be part of a team that is at the forefront of autonomous driving innovation. In addition to competitive compensation, we offer comprehensive benefits that support your well-being and professional growth. You will have access to resources for continuous learning and development, ensuring that you stay ahead in your field. Join us at Waymo and help us build the world's most trusted driver.
