Backend Engineer • Senior

Who you are

You have 5+ years of backend engineering experience building production systems at scale — you've owned services from design through deployment and have war stories from debugging complex distributed systems issues. You possess deep expertise in Java and Python — you've shipped high-throughput APIs that handle millions of requests and have strong opinions on service architecture, dependency injection, and testing strategies. You are familiar with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud Platform — you understand how to leverage these technologies to build robust and scalable applications. Your experience with container technology, including Docker and Kubernetes, allows you to efficiently manage application deployment and orchestration. You have worked with both relational and non-relational database systems, such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, and MongoDB, and you know how to optimize database performance for high-demand applications. You apply professional software engineering best practices, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations — you believe in delivering high-quality, maintainable code.

Desirable

Experience with AI technologies and their application in backend systems would be a plus, as Careem is looking to integrate AI into their services. Familiarity with agile methodologies and participation in agile ceremonies will help you thrive in our collaborative environment.

What you'll do

In this role, you will work closely with other engineers on the team to build highly scalable and robust backend applications and services. You will write high-quality, performant, and reliable code while working on defined tasks and bugs independently. You will participate in the on-call rotation and be willing to jump in and help resolve any incidents within the defined SLA. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand functional specifications and deliver complete features that enhance the user experience. You will contribute to the design and architecture of backend systems, ensuring they meet the needs of the business and can scale effectively as user demand grows. You will also engage in code reviews and mentor junior engineers, sharing your knowledge and best practices to foster a culture of continuous improvement within the team.
