Overview
SpaceX is hiring a Materials Engineer specializing in polymers to implement and troubleshoot novel material systems for the Starship hardware. This role requires hands-on experience in materials selection and testing.
Job Description
Who you are
You have a strong background in materials engineering, particularly with polymers, and are excited about the challenges of developing materials for extreme environments. You possess hands-on experience in implementing and troubleshooting material systems, and you are comfortable guiding engineering and production teams on materials selection and testing. Your expertise includes working with adhesives, sealants, coatings, and other non-metallic materials, and you are adept at generating design for manufacturing requirements. You are detail-oriented and have a knack for coordinating and executing qualification testing of polymer material systems. You thrive in collaborative environments and enjoy partnering with teams to generate ideas for material and process improvements.
What you'll do
In this role, you will own the implementation and scale-up of novel polymer material systems used on Starship hardware. You will provide guidance to engineering and production teams on materials selection, testing, and analysis of various non-metallic materials. Your responsibilities will include generating and maintaining design for manufacturing requirements for these materials and their application processes. You will coordinate and execute qualification testing of polymer material systems and support root cause failure investigations as a subject matter expert for adhesive, rubber, and plastic failure mechanisms. Additionally, you will partner with engineering and production teams to brainstorm and develop ideas for material and process improvements on current and next-generation vehicles.
