Overview

SpaceX is hiring a Mechanical Engineer for the Starshield project to design and develop complex mechanisms and mechanical systems for cutting-edge satellites. You'll work with AutoCAD and SolidWorks in Hawthorne, CA.

Job Description

Who you are

You have a strong background in mechanical engineering with experience in designing complex mechanisms and systems — you understand the intricacies of electromechanical systems and have a passion for innovation in aerospace technology. You are proficient in using design software such as AutoCAD and SolidWorks, enabling you to create detailed and precise engineering drawings. You thrive in collaborative environments, working closely with cross-functional teams to ensure that designs meet both functional and aesthetic requirements.

You possess excellent problem-solving skills and can rapidly iterate on designs based on analysis and feedback — your ability to drive system-level optimization is key to your success. You are detail-oriented, focusing on design for manufacturability (DFM) to create elegant solutions that minimize errors and enhance production efficiency. Your communication skills allow you to effectively convey complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

What you'll do

As a Mechanical Engineer for the Starshield project, you will own the design and development of mechanical systems from conceptual design through to production and on-orbit operations. You will collaborate with a talented team of engineers to establish design criteria and drive system-level optimization, ensuring that all mechanisms meet the rigorous demands of government use. You will rapidly iterate on designs and analyses to inform high-level systems trades, steering the overall product direction.

Your responsibilities will include developing hardware and mechanisms that support various customer needs, focusing on creating designs that are not only functional but also efficient in terms of piece part and process count reductions. You will establish and maintain consistent performance and production metrics, ensuring that all designs are error-proofed at every step of fabrication and integration. Your work will directly contribute to the advancement of SpaceX's mission to enable human life on Mars through innovative satellite technology.

What we offer

At SpaceX, you will be part of a mission-driven company that is at the forefront of aerospace technology. We offer competitive compensation and benefits, along with opportunities for professional growth and development. You will work in a dynamic environment where your contributions will have a direct impact on the future of space exploration. Join us in our quest to make humanity a multi-planetary species.
