Overview

SpaceX is hiring a Mechanical Engineer for the Flight Termination System team to design critical hardware and explosives for the Starship. You'll work on hardware design, analysis, and integration in Hawthorne, CA.

Job Description

Who you are

You have a strong background in mechanical engineering, with experience in designing safety-critical systems — your expertise allows you to navigate complex regulatory requirements while ensuring the highest standards of safety and performance. You possess a deep understanding of hardware design and integration, particularly in the context of explosive devices and high-stakes environments. Your problem-solving skills are top-notch, and you thrive in fast-paced settings where you can take ownership of projects from concept to delivery.

You are familiar with tools like AutoCAD and SolidWorks, which you use to create detailed designs and simulations — your proficiency in these tools enables you to visualize and iterate on complex mechanical systems effectively. You understand the importance of rigorous testing and validation processes, especially when dealing with hardware that impacts safety and mission success. Your collaborative spirit allows you to work closely with cross-functional teams, including regulatory partners, to achieve optimal outcomes.

What you'll do

As a Mechanical Engineer on the Flight Termination System team, you will be responsible for the design and development of hardware that ensures the safety of the Starship during flight — this includes creating manufacturable explosive devices and robust integration designs. You will interface with regulatory partners to tailor and challenge existing space industry standards, ensuring that your designs meet the highest safety criteria. Your role will involve conducting environmental testing and overseeing the assembly of electromechanical systems, ensuring that all components function seamlessly together.

You will lead the entire development process, from initial concept through to vehicle integration — this means you will be deeply involved in every stage of the project, ensuring that your designs are not only innovative but also practical and manufacturable. You will tackle challenging problems at the intersection of safety-critical hardware and high explosives, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in aerospace engineering. Your contributions will directly impact the success of SpaceX's missions, as you work to enable human life on Mars.

What we offer

At SpaceX, you will be part of a mission-driven team that is dedicated to making space travel a reality for humanity — you will have the opportunity to work on groundbreaking technologies that will shape the future of space exploration. We offer competitive compensation and benefits, along with a dynamic work environment that encourages innovation and collaboration. Join us in our quest to explore the stars and make history.
