Overview

Waymo is seeking a Senior Machine Learning Engineer to lead the development of advanced AI/ML infrastructure for simulations. You'll work with large foundation models and scalable infrastructure in London. This role requires expertise in machine learning and distributed training.

Job Description

Who you are

You have extensive experience in machine learning infrastructure, particularly in developing scalable solutions for large models — your background includes working with multi-billion parameter models and optimizing them for performance. You are proficient in Python and have hands-on experience with frameworks like TensorFlow, which you have used to build and deploy machine learning models in production environments.

Your expertise extends to working with ML accelerators and distributed training systems — you understand the intricacies of scaling models and have a track record of implementing solutions that enhance training efficiency. You are familiar with Kubernetes and other orchestration tools, which you have utilized to manage containerized applications in cloud environments.

You possess strong problem-solving skills and a deep understanding of AI/ML principles — you are comfortable navigating complex technical challenges and are adept at collaborating with cross-functional teams to drive innovation. Your communication skills allow you to articulate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Desirable

Experience with simulation environments and realistic modeling is a plus — you have worked on projects that involve simulating real-world scenarios for testing autonomous systems. Familiarity with large datasets and data management practices will also be beneficial in this role.

What you'll do

In this role, you will lead the development of advanced AI/ML infrastructure that supports the Waymo Driver's simulation needs — your work will directly contribute to enhancing the fidelity and steerability of simulations used for testing and training. You will collaborate closely with the Simulator team to understand their requirements and translate them into scalable infrastructure solutions.

You will design and implement systems that leverage large foundation models, ensuring they are optimized for performance and reliability — your focus will be on creating an environment that allows for rapid experimentation and iteration. You will also be responsible for mentoring junior engineers and sharing your expertise in machine learning practices.

Your role will involve continuous improvement of existing systems, identifying bottlenecks, and proposing innovative solutions to enhance the overall efficiency of the simulation infrastructure. You will participate in code reviews and contribute to the development of best practices within the team.

What we offer

Waymo offers a competitive salary range of £150,000—£162,000 GBP, along with participation in an annual bonus program and equity incentive plan — we believe in rewarding our employees for their contributions. You will also benefit from a generous company benefits program, which includes health and wellness initiatives, professional development opportunities, and a supportive work environment.

Join us at Waymo, where you will be part of a mission-driven team focused on transforming mobility and improving safety on the roads — your work will have a direct impact on the future of autonomous driving technology. We encourage you to apply even if your experience doesn't match every requirement, as we value diverse perspectives and backgrounds.
