Overview
Amazon is hiring a Chief Engineer for their Data Center Engineering Operations team to ensure the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems operate at peak efficiency. You'll work with AWS technologies and manage facility operations in San Antonio.
Job Description
Who you are
You have extensive experience in data center operations, particularly in managing mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems — your expertise ensures that critical infrastructure operates at 100% availability. You are a strong technical leader who can effectively communicate with onsite Engineering Operations Technicians and third-party vendors, ensuring seamless collaboration and operational excellence.
Your background includes hands-on experience with preventative maintenance and emergency response for electrical and mechanical systems — you thrive in high-pressure environments and are adept at troubleshooting complex issues. You possess a deep understanding of fire and life safety equipment, ensuring compliance with safety standards while maintaining operational efficiency.
You are skilled in project management, capable of overseeing small-to-medium projects from conception to completion — your ability to manage multiple priorities and work independently is complemented by your collaborative spirit, allowing you to engage effectively with cross-functional teams.
You are committed to providing first-class customer service to internal teams and groups within the data centers — your proactive approach to problem-solving and your dedication to maintaining high standards of service set you apart as a leader in your field.
Desirable
Experience with large-scale data center operations or cloud infrastructure is a plus — familiarity with AWS services will enhance your ability to contribute to the team. Certifications in relevant engineering disciplines or safety standards will further bolster your qualifications.
What you'll do
As the Chief Engineer, you will be the singular focal point for all facility operations within the data center — your role involves ensuring that all systems are operating at peak efficiency through planned preventative maintenance and daily corrective work. You will lead a team of Engineering Operations Technicians, providing guidance and support to ensure they are equipped to handle site-specific needs.
You will manage and execute small-to-medium projects, collaborating with external support groups including engineering, automation, processing, and finance — your ability to coordinate efforts across various teams will be crucial in driving project success. You will also own cluster-wide technical programs that monitor and maintain the effectiveness of DCEO equipment and staff.
Your responsibilities will include responding to emergency situations and ensuring that all safety protocols are followed — you will be available 24/7 to support the engineering operations technicians on site. You will also play a key role in training and mentoring team members, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and operational excellence.
What we offer
Amazon provides a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, dental, and vision insurance, as well as a 401(k) matching program — you will have access to flexible spending accounts and various wellness programs. The salary for this position ranges from $96,000 to $166,300 annually, reflecting the importance of this role within the organization.
You will join a dynamic team dedicated to maintaining the critical infrastructure that supports AWS — your contributions will have a direct impact on the efficiency and reliability of our data centers. We encourage you to apply even if your experience doesn't match every requirement, as we value diverse perspectives and backgrounds.
