Who you are

5+ years of backend engineering experience building production systems at scale — you've owned services from design through deployment and have a strong understanding of distributed systems challenges. You have deep expertise in Java and REST API development, having shipped high-performance services that handle complex authentication and authorization workflows.

You are skilled in working with databases, particularly PostgreSQL, and understand how to optimize queries for performance and scalability. Your experience includes collaborating with cross-functional teams to translate business requirements into robust software solutions, ensuring that the systems you build are secure and maintainable.

You thrive in a remote work environment, effectively communicating with team members across different locations. You are proactive in seeking feedback and continuously improving the developer experience for both internal and external stakeholders.

Desirable

Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure is a plus, as is familiarity with API design principles and best practices. You have a keen interest in enhancing user experience through thoughtful system architecture and design.

What you'll do

As a Senior Backend Engineer at Censys, you will be responsible for building and extending core services that provide new functionality to the platform. You will expand the authentication, authorization, and analytics capabilities, ensuring that they meet the needs of our growing user base. Your role will involve building, testing, deploying, and monitoring a distributed set of services that are critical to our operations.

You will collaborate closely with product teams, designers, and other engineering teams to ensure that the services you develop align with business goals and user needs. Additionally, you will work on expanding the Censys public API to reflect the growing capabilities of our platform, enhancing the overall developer experience.

Your responsibilities will also include improving the performance and reliability of existing services, conducting code reviews, and mentoring junior engineers. You will play a key role in shaping secure and scalable systems that support our core business capabilities, contributing to the overall mission of Censys to provide comprehensive Internet intelligence.
