Who you are
You hold a Master's or PhD in deep learning, specializing in behavior and agent modeling or simulation — your academic background has equipped you with a strong foundation in the principles of machine learning and its applications in real-world scenarios. You have over 3 years of experience working with modern deep learning frameworks, particularly JAX or TensorFlow 2, although you are also comfortable with PyTorch. Your proficiency in Python allows you to write high-quality code, unit tests, and documentation that meets industry standards.
You are passionate about conducting applied research that addresses open problems in autonomous driving — your work is driven by the mission to improve mobility and safety through innovative technology. You thrive in collaborative environments, initiating and fostering partnerships with other research teams, and you are adept at presenting complex results to both peers and leadership in a clear and engaging manner.
What you'll do
As a Senior Research Scientist at Waymo, you will conduct cutting-edge research and development focused on foundation models for autonomous driving. You will design compelling experiments that involve training and evaluating large deep learning models, ensuring that your methodologies are robust and reproducible. Your role will require you to present your findings to both technical and non-technical audiences, translating complex concepts into actionable insights.
You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including engineers and product managers, to integrate your research into practical applications that enhance the Waymo Driver's capabilities. Your contributions will directly impact the safety and efficiency of autonomous vehicles, as you work towards the goal of operating Waymo vehicles in diverse urban environments and under various driving conditions.
In addition to your research responsibilities, you will also mentor junior researchers and contribute to the overall growth of the Applied Research team. You will be expected to stay current with the latest advancements in machine learning and autonomous driving, continuously seeking opportunities to apply new techniques and technologies to your work.

Waymo offers a competitive salary range of $204,000—$259,000 USD, along with eligibility for a discretionary annual bonus program and an equity incentive plan.
