Overview

Waymo is seeking a Senior Software Engineer for Quantitative Evaluations to develop metrics and evaluation methodologies for their autonomous driving technology. You'll work with Python and machine learning techniques to enhance simulation realism. This role requires strong analytical skills and experience in simulation environments.

Job Description

Who you are

You have 5+ years of experience in software engineering, particularly in developing and evaluating complex systems. Your background includes a strong focus on quantitative analysis and simulation methodologies, which are crucial for assessing the performance of autonomous systems. You are proficient in Python and have a solid understanding of machine learning techniques, enabling you to model real-world complexities effectively.

Your experience includes working with simulation environments, where you have developed metrics to measure realism and quality. You understand the importance of sim-to-real gaps and have contributed to projects that require rigorous evaluation of system performance. You are comfortable collaborating with cross-functional teams, including engineers and researchers, to drive improvements in simulation accuracy.

You possess strong analytical skills and are adept at interpreting data to inform decision-making. Your ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders makes you an effective team member. You are passionate about advancing autonomous driving technology and are eager to contribute to a mission that prioritizes safety and mobility.

Desirable

Experience with autonomous systems or robotics is a plus, as is familiarity with evaluation methodologies specific to machine learning models. You may also have a background in developing software for real-time systems, which would enhance your contributions to the team.

What you'll do

In this role, you will be responsible for developing and implementing metrics and evaluation methodologies that guide the development of Waymo's simulation components. You will work closely with the Simulator team to ensure that simulations accurately reflect real-world scenarios, including the behavior of diverse agents and dynamic environments. Your work will directly impact the quality and safety of the Waymo Driver, contributing to the overall mission of improving mobility and saving lives.

You will analyze simulation data to identify critical gaps between simulated and real-world performance, using your findings to inform the development of more realistic simulation models. This involves collaborating with machine learning engineers to create loss functions that enhance the training of these models. You will also participate in cross-functional discussions to align simulation goals with broader engineering objectives.

Your role will require you to stay updated on the latest advancements in machine learning and simulation technologies, ensuring that Waymo remains at the forefront of autonomous driving innovation. You will have the opportunity to mentor junior engineers and contribute to a culture of continuous learning and improvement within the team.

What we offer

Waymo offers a competitive salary range of $204,000—$259,000 USD, along with eligibility for an annual bonus program and equity incentive plan. You will be part of a dynamic team dedicated to transforming transportation through cutting-edge technology. Our company culture emphasizes collaboration, innovation, and a commitment to safety and quality. We encourage you to apply even if your experience doesn't match every requirement, as we value diverse perspectives and backgrounds.
