Overview

Waymo is hiring a Senior Software Engineer to develop state-of-the-art simulations for autonomous driving technology. You'll work with C++, Python, and machine learning to enhance the performance of the Waymo Driver. This position requires significant experience in simulation and software engineering.

Job Description

Who you are

You have 5+ years of experience in software engineering, particularly in simulation and autonomous systems — you've developed complex software solutions that require a deep understanding of both programming and real-world modeling. Your expertise in C++ and Python allows you to create efficient and scalable simulation environments that can accurately represent real-world scenarios.

You possess a strong background in machine learning and understand how to apply it to enhance simulation realism — you have experience working with various machine learning frameworks and can integrate them into simulation systems. Your problem-solving skills enable you to tackle challenges related to realistic agent behavior and environmental modeling.

You thrive in collaborative environments and enjoy working with cross-functional teams — you have experience partnering with machine learning engineers and data scientists to develop comprehensive solutions that improve the performance of autonomous systems. Your communication skills allow you to articulate complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.

You are passionate about the future of autonomous driving and are motivated by the impact your work can have on safety and mobility — you understand the importance of rigorous testing and validation in the development of self-driving technologies. You are eager to contribute to a mission-driven team focused on making roads safer for everyone.

Desirable

Experience with simulation tools and frameworks is a plus — familiarity with industry-standard simulation environments will help you hit the ground running. Knowledge of sensor technologies such as Lidar and radar will enhance your contributions to the team.

What you'll do

As a Senior Software Engineer at Waymo, you will be responsible for developing and optimizing simulation environments that accurately reflect real-world driving conditions — your work will directly contribute to the training and validation of the Waymo Driver, ensuring it can navigate complex scenarios safely. You will collaborate closely with the Simulator Team to model realistic agents, including vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists, as well as environmental factors like weather and traffic control systems.

You will lead efforts to enhance the realism of simulations, leveraging your expertise in machine learning to create intelligent agents that behave like real-world counterparts — this involves designing algorithms that can adapt to various driving conditions and scenarios. You will also be involved in performance analysis, identifying bottlenecks in the simulation process and implementing solutions to improve efficiency.

Your role will include mentoring junior engineers and sharing your knowledge of best practices in software development and simulation techniques — you will help foster a culture of learning and innovation within the team. You will participate in code reviews and contribute to the overall architecture of the simulation systems, ensuring they are robust and scalable.

What we offer

Waymo provides a competitive salary range of $204,000—$259,000 USD, along with eligibility for an annual bonus program and equity incentive plan — we believe in rewarding our employees for their contributions to our mission. You will also enjoy a comprehensive benefits package that supports your health and well-being.

Join a diverse and collaborative team that is dedicated to pushing the boundaries of autonomous driving technology — at Waymo, you will have the opportunity to work on cutting-edge projects that have a real impact on the future of transportation. We encourage you to apply even if your experience doesn't match every requirement, as we value curiosity and a growth mindset.
